Nikola and Rory are a trumpet/piano duo devoted to creating spontaneous compositions. They embrace musical freedom and mystery in order to discover music that is beautiful, unexpected, and inexplicable. The offspring of their combined imaginations reveal wide-ranging influences, including classical impressionism, West Coast chamber jazz, Ewe drumming, and 1970s Serbian-Romani songs.
As a jazz pianist, Rory Cowal has performed in festivals and concert series across North America such as the Angel City Jazz Festival, Harlem in the Himalayas, and Jazz at LACMA. He is a member of Slumgum, an award-winning jazz quartet. As a classical pianist, Cowal’s repertoire spans the breadth of the American avant-garde. His recording of “Old Paint,” by Larry Polansky, was included on a recent release by New World Records.
Nikola Tosic is a trumpet player, composer and workshop facilitator. He received his BA/MA at The Royal Conservatory in The Netherlands, where he continued to live and work, before moving to Canada in 2014. Among Nikola’s musical involvements are music production for dance (Korzo, NDT, HCMA, Springboard), Balkan brass (Orkestar Slivovica), improv-based performance (Rory Cowal, NDT) and collaborative composition (Concertgebouw, Royal Conservatory, UBC, MCO etc).
